A/AN is used with singular countable nouns:

car.
John works in

shop.
I haven't got
a
dog.
AN is usually used before A/E/I/O/U. Exceptions: an hour, a university, a European
etc.

A/AN is also used after the verb 'to be' when we want to say what something/somebody is:
