A/AN is used with singular countable nouns:	It's a car. John works in a shop. I haven't got a dog.
AN is usually used before A/E/I/O/U. Exceptions: an hour, a university, a European etc.:	Does she want a banana or an apple? I live in an apartment. She is a university professor.
A/AN is also used after the verb 'to be' when we want to say what something/somebody is:	Jim is an artist. Dublin is a city in Ireland. Ice hockey is a game.
